Javier Garcia, age 49, was sharing a cell with Christian Marte-Martinez at the Lawrence Police Department headquarters after he was arrested last weekend for disorderly conduct, the Essex County District Attorney's Office reports.

About 5 a.m. Saturday, police discovered Marte-Martinez unresponsive, as previously reported by Daily Voice

Officers began CPR and other life-saving measures before he was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities later charged Garcia with an additional charge of distribution of a class A substance. He will be arraigned in Lawrence District Court as early as Monday morning, the DA's Office reports.

Garcia has not been charged with Marte-Martinez's death. The investigation is ongoing.
